Daily Talker: Facebook Safety Check

In the wake of the deadly terror attacks in Paris, many people turned to Facebook to check on their loved ones. People in the Paris area could use Facebook's "Safety Check" to alert everyone in their network that they were okay with just one click of a button. While many were thankful for the safety feature, others criticized the company's decision to launch it during the Paris attacks. Some questioned why Facebook did not use it during other recent violence, including twin suicide bombings in Beirut one day earlier. Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the company's decision and announced they are changing their policy. Safety Check has only been used five times. Each time for a natural disaster. But Zuckerberg says they will use it for "more human disasters going forward." The company's Vice President of Growth posted a statement on Facebook saying they have gotten a lot of positive feedback for using it. Because there was so much activity on Facebook as the events in Paris were unfolding they decided to launch the safety feature hoping to help users.

What do you think about Facebook's decision to launch the safety feature during the Paris attacks? Under what circumstances should the safety feature be used?
