Boston Public Library cutting jobs
The Boston Public Library system is laying off some managers and about 40 support staff to make up for a steep drop in funding.
A library spokeswoman tells The Boston Globe that four management positions were cut on Thursday and 40 positions are in line for elimination on Friday.
They include custodial, secretarial, library assistant, and human resources positions.
No librarians will be laid off.
The layoffs, most of which are at the central branch in Copley Square, take effect Oct. 9.
The budget for the oldest public library in the nation has shrunk from $48 million in 2009 to $39.6 million for the fiscal year that started July 1.
Library officials are still contemplating closing four of the system's 26 neighborhood branches.
