Keller @ Large: Best Guess About Presidential Race

BOSTON (CBS) - It happens pretty much everywhere I go – I'll be chatting with someone and they'll ask me: "What is going to happen?"

They don't mean with the Red Sox.

They want to know if Donald Trump is going to be our next president.

Of course, I have no idea.

From writing John Kerry off in December of 2003, just a few months before he sewed up the nomination, to declaring Trump toast after he disrespected American prisoners of war, my predictions are not a good investment.

But that answer is kind of a conversation stopper. So here's my best guess about what might unfold, on the condition that you promise not to wager real money on it.

After Trump wins South Carolina on Saturday, and Jeb Bush finishes way off the pace, Bush will – sooner, I suspect, rather than later – have a quiet chat with Marco Rubio. A cabinet post might be mentioned; secretary of education would be a good fit for Bush.

But the focus will be their shared contempt for Trump, and the fact that 65% of Republicans seem to share it. And Bush will drop out and endorse Rubio.

If he does reasonably well in South Carolina, John Kasich may want to hang in there until his home state of Ohio votes on March 15. But if Trump's roll continues, and Rubio continues to hang in the top three, look for Kasich to have the same chat with Rubio.

Vice President? Florida and Ohio make a pretty good one-two punch.

If all that comes to pass, Trump and what's left of Ted Cruz will have their hands full.

If it doesn't, look for the Democrats to get their wish – a one-on-one with perhaps the least likely presidential nominee of all time.
