Slavery is not the cause of the Civil War? Really?
The Governor of Virginia has forgotten to include the slavery issue while celebrating Confederate Heritage Month . That's like talking about the Holocaust without mentioning Jews being exterminated. Are you f@#$%#$&g kidding me????
To make me even crazier about this issue callers were defending him pointing to the "States Rights" argument. Yeah it was about state's rights...each state's right to decide if they could maintain their plantation economies with slave labor. So yes it was a state's rights issue but the core issue was their right to own other humans.
When people insist on saying things that are historically accurate but in a very narrow capacity they tend to reveal things about themselves. What that side of a debate tells me is that somehow the caller thinks slavery was no big deal and it really frightens me. Because if you say that it tells me that although you might not actually think slavery is ok but maybe that it was just a minor blip in American history. It was anything but. Slavery is the single worst blemish on the record of the greatest free society the world has ever known. So please don't say things like "Lee freed slaves before the war ended" yes he did ...in exchange for their military service against the Union Army because the South was getting their ass kicked.
The facts are that the spectre of slavery continued long after the war ended. The military, schools, sports and even restaurants were segregated well into the twentieth century. It is the greatest national disgrace we will ever endure so please don't minimize its impact.
