Feds, NYPD Dismantle Alleged Street Gang In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Nearly two dozen people have been indicted in New York City, accused of being part of a violent street gang that authorities said terrorized residents, made big bucks off drugs and robberies and left a trail of dead bodies in its wake.
On Thursday, officials said a 75-count indictment was unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn.
The indictment accuses 23 alleged members of the Outlaw Gangsta Crips with crimes including racketeering conspiracy, murder conspiracy and attempted murder. The gang is a subgroup of the Crips street gang.
The alleged gang members operated in the area of New York Avenue and Linden Boulevard in Flatbush, Brooklyn, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
The gang members also created phony checks from actual paychecks, deposited them into bank accounts and then withdrew the money, making more than $500,000, according to authorities.
Police said they believe the Crips subset is responsible for a recent uptick of shootings in the area; shootings with rivals who were trying to move in on their drug turf, Jones reported.
Additionally, officials said a wiretap revealed a plan to kill two people. The plot was thwarted by authorities.
Authorities recovered firearms and narcotics at a raid Thursday.
