KENNEDALE (CBSDFW.COM) - Police say cell phone records and social media posts led them to the man who allegedly killed an Arlington Martin High School football player.

Police have Devin Holland in custody for the murder of 18-year-old Carl Wilson.

Holland is accused of shooting and killing Wilson three weeks ago.

According to police they knew that Carl Wilson had gotten into a fight with a fellow student at school.

An affidavit reveals that Holland had ties to a violent Arlington Street gang.

Members of that gang show up for a fist fight between Holland and Wilson but instead the fight turning into a fatal shooting.

"Sometimes you have one that seems a little more senseless than other," says Kennedale Police Chief Tommy Williams.

Before one punch was thrown, police say this man: 20-year-old Holland pulled a 9-millimeter pistol and fired at Carl Wilson, a popular football player and young father. After the shots were fired Wilson laid dead.

"There was no reason for our suspect to insert himself into this event," says Chief Williams.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, a witness told police that he saw Holland, a suspected gang member, shoot Wilson, stand over him after he fell to the ground, and shoot him at least two more times. One shot in the body and one in the head

"Destroyed the life of a young man that overcame some difficulties and had his life going in the right direction, was doing the right thing for his family," says Williams.

Police had been watching Holland for some time. Last Friday, he was arrested in Arlington on weapons and drug charges. He was released on bail and then re-arrested Thursday.

Immediately following the shooting a witness told CBS 11 News that he saw the shooter make his get away.

"The middle one had a pistol in his hand when he was running and hopped into a Red Ford FX 2… a new model Ford," said the witness.

Police, crediting good old-fashioned legwork, tracked down the red pickup and recovered evidence against both Holland and the friend that they believe drove the get away car.

That friend is now being held on unrelated charges.

CBS 11 spoke with one of Wilson's aunts, who say the family is relieved to learn of the arrest and glad that the accused killer is not in position now to hurt others.

The aunt also made it clear that this ordeal, for them, is far from over.
