SUNNYVALE (CBSNewsTexas.com) — A man who allegedly caused a police chase and fired a gun at officers was captured on Friday after an hours-long manhunt that prompted school closures.

The Sunnyvale Independent School District cancelled classes for Friday as police continued to search for the man, who was later identified as Omar Robledo, 20. He was finally taken into custody just after 11 a.m.

As police searched for Robledo, the district decided that it was in the best interests of its staff and students to cancel classes for the day. A spokesperson said in a statement, "We feel that it is prudent to keep our Raiders home today and will be canceling school as a measure of caution and safety."

The situation began around 6 p.m. yesterday on HW-80 in Kaufman County when police tried to stop Robledo, who was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle reported out of Carrollton.

Robledo did not stop and fled west towards Sunnyvale. The chase ended when he hit another vehicle on westbound HW-80 at North Jobson Road in Sunnyvale. Robledo got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, firing several shots at pursuing officers as he did so.

Police asked residents to shelter in place as they searched for Robledo. At about 11 a.m., they announced they had captured Robledo. He was apparently unarmed at the time of his arrest.

A passenger, Alejando Honorato-Calderon, 20, was also arrested and charged with two counts of possessing a controlled substance.

After he was taken into custody by Sunnyvale police, Robledo was turned over to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office. He has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest in a vehicle, evading arrest or detention, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant.
