EULESS (CBS11) – A memorial outside the Euless Police Department as well as one at Carr Park in Euless are steadily growing for fallen Officer David Hofer.

The 29-year-old was shot and killed while responding to a call of a man with a gun on Tuesday at Carr Park.

On Wednesday, the community was reacting with overwhelming grief for the loss of one of their officers.

"We are one big community and it really saddens me," says Euless resident Annie Weeks.

The memorial outside the police headquarters has dozens of flowers and cards from residents who showed up to pay their condolences.

Kay Nathan who has lived in Euless for more than 50 years was overcome by emotions as she laid flowers at the memorial.

"He was so young," says Nathan.  "It's like he walked in to an ambush, and it's just so sad."

Euless is a close-knit community of about 50,000 people. Residents say they can't make sense of this kind of violence towards a police officer of this otherwise quite city.

The gunman, Jorge Gonzalez, also died after other responding officers shot and killed him.
