DALLAS (CBS11) - A South Dallas man needed a fast miracle to help save his lifelong home from further storm damage.
Tommy Briggs, a Navy veteran, says the relentless rain and hail that has pounded the area has taken a toll on his 80-plus-year-old home.
The house which sits on the 3600 block Caulthorn had countless leaks and the roof began caving in during a recent storm.
Briggs doesn't have insurance or enough money to pay for the new roof and was feeling helpless.
He had called several roofers for an estimate.
Out of about half a dozen that he called, Briggs says only one decided to take on the work and to his surprise, he did it for free.
"I had just prayed that god help me get a roof on because we were having a lot of rains a lot of storms and I just couldn't battle it," said Briggs.
Clayton Vette, the owner of Alpha Construction, says he was able to gather some donations to make the no-cost roof replacement happen.
Vette said he was touched by Mr. Briggs' military background and his effort save a lifelong family home despite not having the money to do so.
The roof replacement cost is about $10,000.
"It really seemed like the only thing to do was just to take care of it," said Vette.
"The kindness that he showed to me made me really feel like he was more of a friend," said Briggs.
Briggs had made promise to his mother before she died that he would look after the family house.
The disrepair it was in was so bad he thought he wouldn't have been able to keep that promise until Vette stepped in to help.
Now Briggs says he is looking for way he can pay the act of kindness forward.
"I want to continue that the rest of my life," said Briggs. "I want that to be an important factor in my life."
