DPD identifies student killed in shooting near Woodrow Wilson High School; teenage suspect in custody
Dallas police said one person has died after a shooting near Woodrow Wilson High School late Thursday afternoon.
The shooting was reported around 3:45 p.m. in the 100 block of South Glasgow. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and took the victim, a senior soccer player, to a hospital, where they later died. Dallas police said two other students were "involved" in some way. One of them is a suspect.
On Friday morning, the Dallas Police Department identified the victim as 18-year-old Wornan Garcia Padilla. A 16-year-old suspect is charged with murder, but their name will not be released due to their age, DPD said.
According to Deputy Chief of Communications Robyn Harris, three students were involved in the incident.
"It is, with great sorrow that we share. One of those students did pass away as a result of the injuries sustained," Harris said.
On Thursday evening, Dallas ISD deputy chief of communications Robyn Harris said the victim was an active member of the school's soccer team. He was also a senior, she said. Beyond that, Dallas Independent School District could not release any further details regarding the student.
"A key player. It's terrible that we lost him," Jackson Shull said. "Not just for the team or the sport of anything, but in general."
Shull, a student at the school, said it was on lockdown, and he could see officers driving up the park where the shooting occurred. Dallas ISD would not confirm whether it was only security measures or a lockdown.
"Every incident that occurs at a campus and that doesn't have to extend itself to a shooting. We always review our protocols," Harris said. "We look at ways how we can strengthen and maybe tighten some other processes. And so, that will absolutely occur. But I think what matters most is really being able to provide the support and love and care for our Woodrow Wilson family."
The district will have counseling support for students on Friday.
"It's always horrible when someone dies, but when it's a kid," Shull said. "And it's for this reason. It's just horrible."
