One More Wet Cold Day
The weather pattern remains the same. We've spent the day in the 40's with occasional light rain/drizzle (most of it this morning). Winds have stayed below 10mph out of the north but still a rather chilly day with the lack of sunshine.
The clouds will be with us tonight as well as lows drop to around 40 degrees. There could be a few spits of drizzle or snow grains tonight along with a north wind.
WET AGAIN TOMORROW
For the last few days an upper low has sat just to our west, it brought a white Christmas to the high plains of Texas. It finally moves over north Texas tomorrow. It'll fire up some rain, most of it will fall to in the morning hours with the heaviest amounts east of the metroplex. Below you can see how the HPC puts the big rains to the east:
As the day wears on the rain moves off to the east into Louisiana. Just as the precipitation is leaving east the cold air just above the surface to our west moves over. We'll likely see a few spits of a snow/rain mix as it starts to dry out. Temperatures again be in the upper 40's by afternoon, the roads won't be affected save for them being wet (in the morning).
WEATHER PATTERN FINALLY CHANGING
For the balance of the month of December we've enjoyed a wet pattern, an upper air flow that did NOT look like a La Nina Winter (which are supposed to be warm and dry). For most of the last 30 days an upper low sat over southern California or the Baja of Mexico. This is an active pattern for us; pieces of energy come out of this system to the west of us and help bring Gulf moisture over colder continental air. Today and tomorrow is a perfect example of this. Look at the 500mb flow (about 18,000ft above the surface) and you can see the dark red (vorticity or lift) in the southern stream, bringing us yet another rain event for tomorrow:
The weather pattern is changing. We are going to drier and warmer conditions to close the year and start the new one. This is a 500mb flow on the last day of the year, one more typical of the La Nina winter:
We will end this year with highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's. Right now it's looking dry on New Year's Eve and very mild. Hope you had a great Christmas have a Happy New Year!
