More Rain & A Strong Cold Front This Week
GOOD SOAKING RAIN TODAY… MORE ON THE WAY TONIGHT…
The heavy rain from early in the day has started to taper off across North Texas. There are still pockets of light to moderate rain, but coverage will continue to wane as we go thru the early evening hours. Rainfall has been quite impressive so far. Most areas have received around 1" of rain with some areas approaching 2" in the rain bucket. Here are some rain totals as of 3pm Monday.
4" TO 8" OF SNOW IN WEST TEXAS…
Heavy snow has been falling most of the day between Lubbock and Odessa in West Texas. Snowfall rates have been 1" to 2" per hour in some of the heavier snow bands. This is the backside of our upper level low. We are on the warm side with gulf moisture overrunning the cooler air that is at the surface.
UPPER LEVEL LOW MOVES OVERHEAD TONIGHT…
The upper level low out to our west will track over North Texas tonight into tomorrow morning. More rain will develop after 9pm this evening and continue thru the night. A few isolated thunderstorms will be possible overnight and tomorrow morning, but mainly light to moderate rain thru the night. Temperatures will stay in the low 40s and upper 30s overnight.
TOMORROW…
A cold, wet day on tap for our Tuesday. Rain will linger in the morning into the early afternoon before shifting eastward in the afternoon. Clouds will linger and winds will increase out of the north. Winds will gusts up to 30 mph out of the north and temperatures will stay in the 40s. It will feel like it is in the 30s all day tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY…
This will be our one nice day this week. Some sunshine and temperatures warming to near 60 degrees.
STRONG COLD FRONT WEDNESDAY NIGHT…
A cold front with Arctic Air behind it will arrive Wednesday evening. Fortunately, the coldest of the air will be deflected to the north and east of Texas, but we will have very cold weather for about 36 hours Thursday into Thursday night. As the front arrives Wednesday night temperatures will plunge into the 30s with winds gusting to 40 mph out of the north all night Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
THURSDAY will be sunny and cold with the temperatures barely making it into the low 40s. Winds will continue to be brisk bringing us wind chills in the low 30s and 20s most of the day.
DEEP FREEZE THURSDAY NIGHT… TEENS POSSIBLE FOR SOME FRIDAY MORNING…
With Arctic air in place, clear skies, and light winds… Thursday night has the potential to be the coldest night we have seen this winter. Temperatures at DFW will drop to about 24 degrees but many of our cold spots will see temperatures in the Teens Friday morning!
WEEKEND TROUBLE (MAYBE)…
There are different solutions for what may happen this weekend. The European model which is what I am favoring has temperatures in the 50s with a mix of sun and clouds. But completely opposite that solution is the GFS Model which has a major winter storm tracking across Texas. Most of the other major models are agreeing with the European Model so we will see how things play out over the next few days. Here is the European Model Output...
