FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - I am so thrilled for our radio partners in Dallas with the success of KLUV-FM ("K-LOVE") as the #1 most listened to station in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this summer.

The station has an interesting history. In the late 1950's, as it was told to me, it was supposed to use the call letters KOST (which today is used in Los Angeles on an FM station owned by iHeart Radio which currently ranks #1 there) but never happened. It then became KROW and in 1963 became KLIF-FM under Gordon McLendon. It later became KNUS-FM and became an "underground rock", songs by artists that were not played on Top 40 AM radio, such as Cream, John Mayall, and Jimi Hendrix, especially album tracks.

McLendon sold KLIF-AM in 1972 to Fairchild Industries and offered them KNUS but they declined. He later sold KNUS (later known as KLVU) to San Juan Racing Association in 1979, which became a relatively big radio group in its day. SJRA was legally based in San Juan PR but its top officers were New York lawyers in the firm Cohn, Glickstein and Lurie. I knew some of the SJRA executives as the company I was with from 1978-1983, Gulf Broadcast Group, bought their radio division for $62 million in 1981 and then sold off several of those stations to Infinity Broadcasting.  SJRA sold KLVU separately to TK Communications in 1982.

In 1984, the call letters changed again to KLUV, purchased from a station in Haynesville LA for a reported $10,000. This time the call letters stuck and to this day the station is still known as "98.7 K-LUV." CBS Radio has owned the station since 1995.

Lots of fabulous personalities have appeared on K-LUV over the years, to name a few: Ken "Hubcap" Carter, Steve Eberhart, Debi Diaz, John Summers, Jonathan Hayes, Jay Cresswell (currently KLUV's programming director), Jim Prewitt, Sandi Sharp, Bob Gomez, Mitch Carr, Ben Laurie, Bob deCarlo……….and Ron Chapman!

You already know the lineup but here it is again:

*5-9am:  Jody Dean & The Morning Team w/David Rankin and Rebekah Black

*9-2pm:  Jenny Q

*2-7pm: Blake Powers

*7-1am: Jim Zippo

And Sunday mornings from 8-12nn, tune in to "America's Greatest Hits With Scott Shannon." Shannon, as you may know, is the morning drive personality on sister station WCBS-FM/New York City, otherwise known "CBS-FM 101.1", and one of the most successful radio personalities in the nation.

Beaming 99,000 watts from Cedar Hill TX from 1663 feet above average terrain, the address for the greatest hits of all time in the DFW area is "98.7 K-LUV", KLUV-FM HD1, and the Radio.com App!  See you next time!
