Get Ready For More Snow

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Close, but no cigar.

The mercury dipped to 17 officially at DFW this morning.  That's three degrees off from tying the record low of 14 degrees set in 1905.  Cloud cover overnight kept temperatures from falling into the single digits for most of North Texas.

Another round of snow
Clouds persist in our skies today as a strong upper level disturbance gathers strength in southern New Mexico/northern Mexico.  The system is taking aim on North Texas, but is working with very dry air.  The CBS 11 Storm feels that the system will be strong enough to wring out any available moisture in the atmosphere and produce light snow showers and flurries beginning after midnight tonight.  The likely onset for our Metroplex will be around 3-5 a.m.

Right now, forecast amounts will be in the 0.5" range along and south of the I-20 corridor with a dusting north of the I-20 corridor and into southern parts of Denton and Collin Counties.  Snowfall amounts near 1" are possible south of a line from Stephenville to Cleburne to Waxahachie to Canton.  Snowfall amounts near 2" are possible from Hillsboro to Corsicana to Palestine.

The computer model guidance is now trending toward lighter amounts with the focus southeast of our Metro area.  The key to this event is the air will be very dry and temperatures well below freezing.  Therefore, any snowfall will accumulate with no melting.

Sub-freezing temps:  2+ Days and counting
During the 4 o'clock hour Tuesday morning, the mercury dipped below the freezing mark at DFW.  If we stay below 32 degrees Friday afternoon, we will likely go 104 hours below freezing.  The last time we went that long was January 10-15, 1997 for a 107 hour stretch.  The longest sub-freezing streak on record is 295 hours December 18-30, 1983.  December of 1983 still holds six record low temperatures.
