MERIDIAN (CBS11) - The Smiths had a long labor when they gave birth to their first child, Lucas.
"We had gotten probably not even 20 miles down the road and its about 50 to get there," Jeffrey Smith recalled.
"There was just a little more pressure than I thought I should be feeling so I asked Jeff to pull over," Lacey said.
"I went into a brief state of denial. Which is why I was thinking maybe she's not as close as she thinks and maybe we just stay on the road," Jeffrey said.
"And then I asked him to pull over a little more forcefully and he believed me that time," Lacey said.
Jeffrey found a clearing along the highway on an isolated stretch of road.
Jeffrey said, "And I walked around the passenger side and she said, 'She's coming.' I walked around to the passenger side and kind of got into a delivery position."
"I don't know if there was much room in my mind for thinking other than it's time to have this baby," Lacey said.
She did think to ask if two-year old Lucas was okay in his car seat in the back.
"And that's when he said, 'That's okay mommy. We'll be there soon.' And I turned to her and I said, 'I think he's reassuring you'," Jeffrey said.
"A minute or so later she started crowning," Jeffrey recalled. "The baby was coming. I said, 'Oh! Yeah, she's coming'.
"And before we knew it she was there in the front seat of the car in my hands and then in mom's."
Seven-pound six-ounce Phoebe was alive and well.
"There was a sense of relief," Lacey said. "I couldn't stop laughing and smiling afterward!"
"Well, other than not making it there and having to do the delivery part ourselves in the car, it was pretty smooth," Jeffrey Smith laughed.
