Family Jumps To Safety During Fire

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - 14 apartment units were destroyed in an apartment fire in Irving Saturday afternoon.
The fire affected 20 units at Finley apartments. A man driving by says he saw the smoke, stopped and pounded on doors, yelling at people to get out.
A mother and her son had to jump to safety from their apartment window. Several people told CBS11 they saw Rosa Maria Vanegas, hanging from a second story window.
Irving police officer Ryan Turner and a firefighter told her to jump but she was afraid. The fire and the smoke were intense and it was getting closer to them.
She told her son David to jump first. When Rosa Maria jumped, the police officer and the fire fighter cushioned her fall.
After the fire was out Mrs. Vanegas hugged that police officer and thanked him.
"I was playing video games when I saw the fire. I told my mom we need to jump. And we jumped from the window. I was afraid. So scared, " says David Vanegas.
Irving firefighters believe the fire started in a rear unit.
Irving police stayed on the scene while workers at the complex to put up a fence to protect people's property.
The cause is still under investigation.
