Driver and passenger jump from van while being chased by ICE agents in Massachusetts, police say
Police in Medway, Massachusetts say two people jumped from a moving vehicle while being chased by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents Wednesday morning.
It happened in the area of West and Fisher streets, the Medway Police Department said.
Police said they received several reports of unmarked police vehicles speeding on West Street. One caller said a white van crashed on Fisher Street, and said there appeared to be ICE agents on scene.
When Medway police officers arrived, they said they were told by federal agents that ICE was trying to stop a white van on Route 109 in Milford. Medway police said the van fled, crashed into a vehicle that had ICE agents inside, and continued driving into Medway.
ICE agents told police that when on Fisher Street, the driver and passenger jumped from the still-moving van, which then crashed near high-tension lines.
No one was hurt during the crash, Medway police said.
Following the crash, federal agents chased after the individuals on foot and also used their vehicles to look for them. Despite the search, no one was taken into custody.
The van that crashed during the chase was towed from Fisher Street, which was temporarily closed during the search but has since reopened.
"The Medway Police Department was not involved in the enforcement operation, other than assisting with traffic control and facilitating the vehicle's removal to safely reopen the roadway. Any inquiries regarding this incident should be directed to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement," Medway police said in a statement.
WBZ-TV reached out to ICE for comment, but has not yet heard back at the time this articled was published.
