Triple murder suspect shoots himself after crashing minivan into North Texas Buc-ee's, injuring a woman
A man suspected in a triple murder in East Texas shot himself in the head after crashing a minivan into a Buc-ee's in Ennis early Friday, leaving himself and a woman hospitalized, police said.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Christopher Kyle Reid Jr., 29, of Hubbard. Reid is accused of fatally shooting three people in a home in the Cedar Creek Cove subdivision in Mabank, Henderson County, earlier in the day.
Buc-ee's incident occurred around 5 a.m.
The Ennis Police Department said the incident happened around 5 a.m. at the Buc-ee's off I-45 and Creechville Road. A maroon 2003 Dodge Caravan drove into one of the store's entrances, pinning a woman against a sales display. The driver, identified as Reid, then shot himself.
Police described the victim of the Buc-ee's crash as a woman in her 30s from Oklahoma, who was passing through Ennis. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Suspect linked to Mabank homicides
Reid was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police did not initially release his identity, but the description matched that of the person of interest sought in a triple homicide in Henderson County.
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office had posted earlier Friday that they were searching for Reid, believed to be driving a maroon Dodge Caravan. The post was later updated to say Reid had been found.
Three killed in Henderson County
Reid was wanted for a triple homicide that happened in Mabank around 2:30 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Henderson County deputies responded to the initial call and found several gunshot victims inside a home. Three people were confirmed dead, and others were injured but survived, said Megan Hogan, public information officer for the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, in an interview with KYTX.
Neighbor recalls chilling moment after Mabank shooting
Cheryl Noble, who lives near the victims in Mabank, says her front door, deck, and steps were stained with blood after one of the wounded came to her home seeking help.
"He came tapping on the door. Real loud," Noble said. "He said, 'Help me, I've been shot.'"
Noble said her son knows the man who was injured, and what he said next left her shaken.
"He said his brother shot him," Noble said. "He didn't say nothing about the family."
Investigators haven't confirmed whether the suspect shot family members, but some neighbors even heard the gunfire.
Noble struggled to describe the impact.
"Just unsettled. You know, very disturbing," she said.
Investigation spans multiple jurisdictions
Hogan said the suspect later appeared at the Buc-ee's in Ennis, where he shot himself. She confirmed the vehicle crash injured another person, but did not have the victim's status, as it fell under a different jurisdiction.
She said the Texas Rangers, Henderson County District Attorney's Office, and Ennis Police Department are assisting with the investigation. The motive and relationship between the suspect and the victims have not been released.
Officials working to protect residents
Hogan said Henderson County officials remain committed to protecting residents and are actively working to maintain public safety in the wake of the incident. She thanked the public for their concern and reiterated the county's commitment to protecting residents.
