Championship parade held for the South Oak Cliff High School Golden Bears after winning 5A state football championship
Dozens of staff, students, parents, and community members went out to support the South Oak Cliff community on Saturday, as they gathered for the football state championship parade. This is the team's third state title. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux was there to support the community. He says it's important that the department is a part of the community.
"I want all these kids to know that the police department supports them, and we want to congratulate them on this accomplishment," Comeaux said. "We have to be a part of the community, so we can build that trust and really be with each other."
One of the team's MVP's Jamarion Phillips said South Oak Cliff High School has long been underestimated.
"They look at SOC and they think about bad things about us, and we don't have the best resources, and they think we can't compete at a high level, like all the other schools that have nice resources," said Phillips. "So us putting on for our community is just telling everyone, we can play with you even though you have nicer facilities, and all of that, we can still compete with you at a high level."
Head Coach Jason Todd said this isn't only about football, it's about supporting youth outside of sports as well.
"Beyond football, if you just look at our academic record, we were 89 , a B+, we were one point away from being away an A, so just like the last season, we were a couple points away from being state championships, we tried to get those couple points in the academic field also to be an A campus this year, and it just shows that athletics and academics can be successful hand and hand, one doesn't have to override the other," said Todd. "When you all get behind something and support these kids, anything is possible."
Todd said next year they're going for their fourth win, hoping to take home another state championship title.
The Next Generation Action Network teamed up with the Dallas ISD to host the celebration parade.
