The grande dame of local theater is the Dallas Theater Center (DTC), one of the best theater companies in Dallas. The DTC presents at various venues throughout Dallas, but particularly at the AT&T Performing Arts Center (where it is a resident company), the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre, and the Kalita Humphreys Theater, originally designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright. Previous performances include plays by Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Tennessee Williams and August Wilson. The DTC also produces and showcases many new plays.

Founded in 1961, the nonprofit Theatre Three offers a diverse mix of musicals, comedies and dramas in an intimate performance space seating only 242. The theater company showcases both original plays, as well as traditional classics, including holiday staples. It also offers space to many local companies, including Teatro Dallas, Crossroads Theatre Company and Echo Theatre.
