DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A freeway south of downtown Dallas was closed for nearly three hours after a crash involving a Dallas police squad car.

The wreck happened before 3:30 a.m. on South Central Expressway at Pennsylvania Avenue.

Driver Jerry Agnew said he and his friend were trying to get their disabled vehicle out of the main lanes and onto the shoulder when the car was hit by a Dallas police officer. The squad car was then struck by another vehicle.

"The car had [sic] went dead on us and then my friend and I were pushing the car and the police car just hit the back of the car. If I wouldn't have pulled my friend out of the way he wouldn't even be here."

Two adults and a 4-month-old child were in the back seat of Agnew's car. His vehicle was left mangled, but no one involved was seriously injured.

As a precaution, the police officer was taken to Baylor Hospital to be checked out.

Southbound 175 at Pennsylvania was temporarily closed, but backups impacted morning rush hour traffic.
