UNIVERSITY PARK (CBSDFW.COM) - Two residents are safe thanks to their quick-thinking neighbors. But their house in University Park is now a charred mess after a fire late Monday night. It happened shortly before 10:00 p.m. in the 3500 block of Hanover Street.
Flames ripped through the home, and firefighters worked hard to stop the blaze from spreading to other nearby houses as they tried to extinguish the fire.
"The wind was a tough one," stated Assistant Chief Shane LeCroy with the University Park Fire Department on Monday night. "Whenever you have wind blowing like we had tonight, it just kind of fans the fire."
The fire quickly burned into the attic of the two-story structure, and left little behind. Investigators have not yet figured out what first caused the flames.
Nobody was hurt in the late night blaze, and firefighters are crediting that to some neighbors who were among the first to see the flames and call for help. After dialing 911, those neighbors rushed over to assist the elderly couple that was in the home, and help them get out safely.
