Senate Republicans, including McConnell, have been signaling to the president they would prefer a speedy trial that does not involve calling any new witnesses.
Amash left the Republican Party earlier this year after saying he believed President Trump had committed impeachable acts.
"We may interfere with some tee times here, but we ought to really stand up for the demeanor, the history and the traditions of the Senate," Durbin said.
Public hearings have done little to sway public opinion with few people changing their mind.
