That's good news for a team that is 1-11 and trying to avoid setting a franchise-worst mark for losses in a single season. The Jets matchup may be the last good chance for the 49ers to win another game in 2016.

As the team prepares to host the New York Jets this Sunday, though, there is some good news for the team. Wide receiver Torrey Smith was announced as the Niners' nominee for the 2016 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, annually given to the NFL player best exemplifying a commitment to philanthropy and community involvement.

In 2011, the San Francisco 49ers defense gave up just 14.3 points per game in the regular season, as the team went 13-3 and hosted the NFC Championship Game. In every season since then, however, the 49ers have gotten a little less intimidating on defense to the point that the San Francisco defense is the worst in the NFL in 2016. The team is giving up 31.3 points per game this year, which is a big reason for a nine-game losing streak that has the 49ers headed toward their worst season since 2004.
