Man Arrested For New Year's Murder

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (CBS13) -- The man quickly identified as a person of interest in the murder of a woman found dead early New Year's Day has been officially charged with the crime, authorities said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says 32-year-old Demetrius Shaffer has been charged with the rape and murder of Rajeet Singh, who was found partially nude near light rail tracks a short distance away from a poker room.

Shaffer and Singh were both spotted on surveillance footage at the poker room a short time before the murder, and within days, Shaffer had been identified as a person of interest in the case.

Detectives said DNA evidence recently linked Shaffer to the murder.

Shaffer is a registered sex offender and was already in custody on unrelated charges.
