WPIAL Football Champions Crowned At Heinz Field

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - High school football teams from around the area are looking to become WPIAL champions at Heinz Field today. Here's a look at the action:

Class AAAA – North Allegheny 21 Woodland Hills 14

North Allegheny scored the first 21 points of the contest and held on to win their second championship in school history.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Tigers' defense stepped up big in the game, limiting Woodland Hills' dangerous running back, Lafayette Pitts, to only 49 yards in the game. Pitts had already rushed for over 1,700 yards this season.

Woodland Hills did not go down without a fight, however.

Quarterback Pat Menifee hooked up with Shakim Alonzo for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Pitts found the endzone after a 25-yard run with 1:24 to play in the third quarter.

North Allegheny will now meet State College in the PIAA playoffs on Friday.

Class AAA - Central Valley 24 Montour 7

In the first upset of the day, Central Valley (10-3) took home its first WPIAL Class AAA title in the first year of the program.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Warriors began their run as the 14th seed in the 16-team playoff.

The same two teams met earlier this season with top-seeded Montour (12-1) getting the 12-7 win.

Central Valley took the lead at the end of the first half on a 35-yard punt return by Robert Foster.

Up next for Central Valley is a date with Erie Cathedral Prep Friday night at Erie's Veterans Stadium.

Class AA – South Fayette 19 Aliquippa 6

The drought is over for South Fayette after winning their second WPIAL title in school history. Their only previous title came in 1964.

In another battle of 12-0 teams, turnovers ruled the day.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Aliquippa racked up 357 yards of offense, but fumbled four times.

South Fayette sealed the victory with a two-yard touchdown run by Tyler Fiorentini with 2:25 left in the game.

The Lions will now face District 9 champion Brockway (12-0) next week.

Class A – Clairton 12 Rochester 0

In a clash of two 12-0 teams, something had to give.

Desimon Green threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Bears pitched their ninth shutout of the season.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the win gives Clairton its eighth title.

Clairton's defense was a key factor in getting them to the title game and they showed why on Saturday by holding Rochester to only 64 yards.

The Bears have only allowed 26 points in 13 games this season.
