Volunteers Help Donegal Fire Victims

KREGAR (KDKA) -- More than 30 volunteers are hard at work in Kregar, Westmoreland County, this week helping to build a home for a family of fire victims.

The mobile home belonging to Stephen Roadman and his family burned to the ground in Donegal on Christmas Day after a space heater caught fire.

Stephen had to be treated for smoke inhalation and is still recovering. But his wife, four children, two dogs and two cats all got out safely.

Shortly after the fire, Alice Roadman, a relative, sent a text to Pastor Stuart Adams at the Well Springs Church in Scottdale and summoned his help to get the Roadmans back on their feet.

He posted a prayer chain on Facebook and Twitter and the effort grew from there.

People from across the state began donating clothing, toys and building supplies. Tuesday, volunteers from the Well Springs Church as well as the Family Fellowship Christian Center in Donegal and the Kregar Community Church pitched in to help.

The volunteers are working on a mobile home that Stephen Roadman was already working on for his family. They're redoing all the wiring and plumbing and putting in new dry wall.

For now, the Roadmans are staying at a nearby hotel, humbled at the way their community has stepped in to help them rebuild their lives.
