Unusual Items You Can Rent To Save Cash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- From bikes to books to cars and clothes, anything goes when it comes to renting these days.

No more buying. everything seems to be for rent now. Renting is so popular, marketing expert Audrey Guskey says it's a top consumer trend for 2016.

"We are a throw away society and we found that people don't want a lot of stuff," says Guskey.

Need a dress? There's Rent the Runway for that. Need some green space? You can rent a backyard.

For those who want to rent a car, check out turo.com. You rent a car from another person. Turo says the rentals are 30 percent cheaper than major car rental companies, the selection is huge, 800 makes and models including luxury cars, and it's convenient. Many owners will drive the car to you and drop it off.

If you want to rent out your car, Turo says the average owner makes $600 a month.

"A lot of things you can rent that you would never dream of renting," says Guskey.

You've heard of Airbnb where you can rent a vacation home. Well, what about Airpnp? It's where you can rent a bathroom. One along the East Busway has a loud fan for added privacy. You can find dozens of bathrooms for rent along the Mardi Gras parade route in New Orleans.

"You can even rent a casket," says Guskey.

At Lanigan Funeral Home, you can rent a casket for $890. It's an option for someone who wants to be cremated but also wants a viewing.

"The casket is then reused. We reuse it a couple of times and then are able to use that casket and present it to someone at a deep, deep bargain rate to someone who wishes to be buried but doesn't have a lot of funds," says funeral director, Patrick Lanigan.

You can save big time with weddings. Borrowing Magnolia has wedding dresses you can borrow at a deep discount. You can also send in your old dresses to be rented. On average, owners make $535 on their rental gowns.
