Truck Accidents Hit Record Number In Allegheny Co.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Is Allegheny County the most dangerous place to drive in the state?

That question is being posed this evening by road safety experts who say there are more truck accidents here than anywhere else in Pennsylvania.

KD Investigator Marty Griffin spent the day with Pittsburgh Police as they tracked down unsafe trucks.

An 18-wheeler loaded with steel was pulled over on the Parkway. Police said the truck was a high-speed 54,000-pound hazard.

"It's a rather unsafe situation for the public," Officer Tom Jacques said.

What got the attention of police was actually a big chain banging against a tire and then banging up onto the top of the truck as it went down the highway.

Truck safety is a big issue in Allegheny County. Accidents hit a record number in the county last year.

The experts said the accident numbers are high and have been for more than four years. Officers are convinced enforcement is the only way to bring them down.

On Saturday, a free inspection and training session will be held on the North Shore.

As for the pulled over truck, he's been declared out of service and his vehicle was described as dangerous.

Before he was allowed to leave the scene, the driver had to secure the steel on the back of his truck. He was also given a number of citations before being sent on his way.

The hope is that strict training and enforcement will reduce accidents and deaths involving big rigs.
