Storms Cause Major Flooding, Disaster Emergency Declared In Some Areas

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A line of thunderstorms packing heavy rains is causing flooding issues around the area.

In some areas, like North Fayette Township, a disaster emergency has been declared.

According to KDKA-TV Meteorologist Dennis Bowman, nearly two inches of rain had fallen from midnight to 9 a.m.

The outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel were closed for a period of time. but were reopened around 9 a.m. Traffic was being detoured from the Fort Pitt Bridge to West Carson Street to Route 51 to the Parkway West.

Crews also are closing part of Banksville Road because part of the hill is coming down onto the road.

In Robinson Township, crews are on scene along Brookside Drive, where a woman is trapped on the top of her car.

Several roads in Mount Lebanon have been closed as well including, Cedar, part of Robb Hollow and Gilkeson at the Galleria.

Part of the T line is closed in Bethel Park after water covered the tracks.

In Castle Shannon, several parking lots are flooded in the area of Route 88 and Grove Road.

In Imperial, a viewer sent us pictures of flooding on Route 30 near Pittsburgh Cryogenic Services.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Michael Huss told KDKA's Marty Griffin that Banksville Road is on the rise again and Route 51 is receding.

The Outback Steakhouse in the South Hills was under about 3 to 4 feet of water on the outside of the building.

In Baldwin, Streets Run Road was flooded by the creek that runs next to the road. As a result it deposited six inches of silt and brought down power lines with a show of sparks. A woman had to be rescued by a Swift Water Rescue unit, but the water appears to be receding.

Duquesne Light is reporting that approximately 2,200 customers without electricity.

However, while some of the rain may have tapered off over the course of the morning, we're not out of the woods yet.

Bowman said periods of rain and thunderstorms will be affecting the area throughout the day. Some thunderstorms have the potential to create gusty winds, hail and additional heavy rain during the afternoon and evening hours.

Our high today will be 84 degrees. Tonight, strong storms diminish to showers for the overnight with a low of 67 degrees.

Showers will end during the morning on Thursday with breaks in the clouds for the afternoon. Tomorrow's high will be 76 degrees.
