South Fayette Twp. Ordinance Bans Drilling
SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A local community is taking a stand against natural gas drilling.
The South Fayette Township Commissioners voted to ban drilling near residential areas and conservation districts in their township.
The majority of residents were relieved to know that South Fayette Commissioners listened to their passionate opposition to Marcellus Shale drilling.
They say the drilling would put their health and environment at risk.
"I'm glad they did it, the community said their peace and what they were looking for and tonight the commissioners followed through with what we wanted," Scott Simms, a resident, said.
But people who support drilling see it as a missed opportunity for their community.
"I think they made a big mistake and hopefully someone will take them to court and overturn it," Mike Mikus, a resident, said. "If not, elections come up in May."
The vote could be historic. Allegheny County reviewed the pending ordinance and can now look to it as a model for surrounding areas.
Commissioners reminded the audience the ban is an ordinance that can be changed in the future.
