Ross Township To Hold Meeting Over Deer Population Concerns

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night to discuss Ross Township's deer management policy.

A meeting will be happening at the Ross Township Municipal Building.

"'Dan, what are we going to do about the deer? It's out of control,'" said Dan DeMarco, Ross Township Commissioner.

That's the question Ross Township Commissioner Dan DeMarco gets often from the community.

Deer collisions, Lyme Disease and the ruining of plants for homeowners -- it all goes back to the fact that there are just too many deer.

The township has faced some challenges when it comes to controlling and fixing the growing deer population.

There were people feeding the deer, which prompted the township to pass a "deer-feeding ban."

Other challenges included hunting restrictions and safety concerns.

DeMarco says the township recently conducted a survey with residents and many of them agree, it's an issue.

"Eighty-one percent of the residents in the survey said the deer are a problem and we need to do something, something needs to be done about it," said DeMarco.

For DeMarco, there is a solution: "Well managed hunt is the best way to control the deer population."

A meeting is taking place Tuesday at the Ross Municipal Center at 7 p.m.

Discussions will be taking place to hopefully solve a problem that's been plaguing Ross Township homeowners for too many years.
