Suspect accused of setting fire to Ross Township ATM tells police he wanted to make a statement
A man is now facing multiple charges after police said he admitted to setting fire to an ATM in Ross Township on Wednesday morning.
Police said Keith Coyne Jr. turned himself in at the police station around 6 p.m. Wednesday night in connection with a firebombing at the Chase Bank on McKnight Road.
"He advised that this was an international thing that he did," said Ross Township Deputy Chief Brian Kohlhepp. "He was upset with the federal government and viewed the banking industry as an arm of the government and through that, decided that if he set this fire, it would make a statement."
Investigators said not only was the act deliberate, but the target was also intentional.
"In fact, he said he picked this location because he knew it was adjacent to a fire department, and he felt that it would be very safe because it's away from a building," Kohlhepp said.
Just after midnight on Wednesday, Ross Township police and the Berkley Hills Fire Department were called to the Chase Bank on McKnight Road for a fire set to an ATM.
The Ross Township police then put out a call with pictures of the suspect and asked anyone with information to contact them. Chase Bank also provided the police with surveillance footage.
When speaking with the police, Coyne confirmed he was the person in the surveillance footage. Investigators believe he wanted to get caught.
According to the criminal complaint, Coyne said that he wanted to make a "statement" against the federal government and chose a banking institution to do so. The gasoline canister found at the scene had the phrase "F**k off" written on it in black marker, police said.
Police say this wasn't free speech; the First Amendment doesn't cover an act that puts public safety at risk to make a political statement.
"We would encourage folks to, you know, do this in a peaceful sort of way and not do it in ways that are destructive to property and could hurt others. That's obviously not the right way to go about it," said Kohlhepp.
Coyne is now facing two charges of arson as well as a charge of criminal mischief.
The ATM appears to still be functional.
