Students Hurt In School Bus Collision In Butler County

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Five students were injured in a school bus crash Friday afternoon in Butler County.

Firefighters and rescue crews were called to the scene in Jefferson Township around 2 p.m.

It was supposed to be the start of a fun afternoon.

Classes were dismissed early Friday for the start of the holiday break. But the fun turned chaotic when one school bus full of students rammed into the back of another.

"I'm sure it was chaotic [because] you got two busloads of kids and there was some pretty good damage at the front end of one bus," said Chief Chris Ballina, of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department. "The rear impact on the other one pushed the bumper in."

The accident happened along Dinner Bell Road near Saxonburg.

Four kids were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

A fifth was taken to Children's Hospital with a head injury.

School bus crashes occur often, but it's extremely rare when two school buses collide with each other.

"We can do without those," said Chief Ballina. "I'm sure the wet roads had something to do with it. Again, state police will be investigating that."

The students were from Knoch High School in the South Butler County School District.

The school district released this statement on the incident:
"On Friday, December 20, 2013, an accident occurred on Dinnerbell Road at approximately 12:30 p.m. involving two South Butler County School District busses transporting students from Knoch High School and Knoch Middle School.

"Students received immediate care from first responders. Those requiring medical attention were taken by ambulance to area hospitals. Additionally, the district is aware that some parents were taking precautionary measures to have their children examined by family doctors or local care centers.

"In accordance with district procedures, students not requiring immediate medical attention were transported back to Knoch High School for the parent reunification process, which has been completed."
