Pirates Sign INF Josh Fields To Minor League Contract

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have been making moves this offseason to prepare new manager Clint Hurdle for a chance to end their 18-season losing streak.

The Pirates signed infielder Josh Fields to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training in Bradenton, Fla.

Fields, a third baseman, had a .306 batting average with three home runs and six RBI's in 13 games for the Kansas City Royals last year. He missed most of the season with a hip injury.

Previous to his injury-shortened 2010 season, he had a .234 BA with 34 home runs and 107 RBI when he played for the Chicago White Sox and Royals from 2006 to 2009.

Former Pirates pitcher Chan-ho Park has reportedly signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with Japan's Orix Buffaloes.

The 37-year old Park will be a starting pitcher for the Buffaloes.

The Pirates claimed Park off of waivers from the New York Yankees on Aug. 4.  He pitched in 26 games for the Pirates allowing 14 runs and striking out 23 in 28 1/3 innings.

Park has a record of 124-98 with a 4.36 ERA during his 17 years in Major League Baseball.

South Korean media said Park's 124 wins are the MLB Asian win record.
