Murder Suspect Takes Own Life In Point Breeze Standoff

POINT BREEZE (KDKA) - A man wanted in connection with a murder in Larimer took his own life during a standoff in Point Breeze Wednesday morning.

According to police, the standoff started at an apartment building in the 200-block of North Homewood Avenue around 12:30 a.m.

Police were initially led to the building after Ka'Sandra Wade, 33, was found shot to death in Larimer.

Wade's family was concerned for her well-being and asked police to check on her. When they arrived at her home, they found she had been shot.

During their investigation, they learned where her boyfriend lived and went to speak with him at the apartment in Point Breeze.

When they arrived, the man told police he had a gun and would take his own life. He also admitted to killing Wade.

"Upon making contact with the suspect, he mentioned he was armed with a firearm and intended on killing himself. He did implicate himself in the murder of Miss Wade," Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Tom Stangrecki said.

At that time, the SWAT team was called in and surrounded the building for several hours. Tactical team members fired several irritant grenades into his apartment.

The standoff ended around 4:45 a.m. when the suspect took his own life.

"They did locate the suspect down on the ground, was unresponsive. It was later determined that he died or was deceased and had shot himself," Stangecki said.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has been identified as 51-year-old Anthony Brown of Pittsburgh. Neighbors said he was a nice man.

"He talks to me, he talks to everybody in the building. He shovels the snow. He's a nice guy I would never think anything like this would happen to him," Jason Brown said.
