1 Arrested After Shooting Near Allentown Elementary School

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A 21-year-old man is in critical, but stable condition at UPMC Mercy Hospital after he was shot in the chest on a basketball court near the Grandview Elementary School in Allentown Thursday evening.

Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Sonya Toler says the man then went across the street and collapsed in front of a home in the 800-block of McLain Street near Grandview Park.

It all happened around 6:45 p.m.

The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Khalil Singletary.

Based on a description from witnesses, police were able to arrest Singletary within minute of arriving at the scene.

Police noticed fresh footprints in some high grass nearby, which led them to Singletary.

Officers found a gun concealed in a pair of sweatpants next to Singletary in the high grass as well.

According to witnesses, Singletary was wearing the sweatpants at the time of the shooting but changed into black shorts.

Neighbors described a frightening scene immediately after the shooting.

Gary Lewis told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "I heard the kids playing, then I heard a bang, and the kids' tone changed, you could hear them screaming and running in different directions."

Lewis was in his backyard feeding deer when the he the gunshot.

Lewis' wife, Debbi, said it was sad to see all the kids sobbing. She said she also witnessed either the victim's mother or girlfriend holding the victim's limp body.

"It's getting out of hand; it's ridiculous," Debbi Lewis said.

According to the criminal complaint, when police ran Singletary's name through their system, they realized he was wanted by several departments.

He was previously convicted of a felony involving a controlled substance, and wasn't supposed to have a gun.

A witness identified Singletary out of a police lineup.

He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, where a corrections officer found a full stamp bag of heroin marked "Uber" in Singletary's pocket.

Singletary is facing a list of charges including, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property and firearms violations.
