80-year-old man was drunk and high when he caused wrong-way I-70 crash, police say
An 80-year-old man was driving drunk and high when he caused a fiery wrong-way crash on Interstate 70 in Westmoreland County, police said.
Daniel Oliver is facing several charges, including driving under the influence, risking catastrophe and driving under the influence of a controlled substance, the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office announced on Wednesday. The crash on I-70 in Hempfield Township near the Yukon exit shortly around 1 a.m. on Feb. 10 shut down the highway for hours.
When Pennsylvania State Police talked to KDKA about the crash after it happened, troopers said Oliver was driving an SUV west in the eastbound lanes of I-70 when he struck a tractor-trailer, "pinballing" between two before hitting a third.
According to the criminal complaint, when troopers tried to talk to Oliver, "an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanated from his breath" and he kept repeating himself. Oliver consented to a preliminary breath test, which showed a positive reading for alcohol, police said. A blood test came back showing he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.095%, and he tested positive for THC.
Police said they also got dash cam video showing Oliver's SUV driving westbound on I-70 East.
A few injuries were reported, and police at the time said it was lucky there weren't any fatalities. The crash shut down I-70 in both directions for hours.
Oliver has been arraigned on the charges and released, the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office said.
