LIST: Steelers Drop In 2016 List Of NFL's Best Fans

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A new list is out ranking the best NFL fans for 2016.

Surprisingly, the annual study done by Michael Lewis of Emory University, ranks the Pittsburgh Steelers near the middle of the pack.

Using 15 years of attendance data and four years of social media data, Lewis used "Dynamic Fan Equity" for his study.

This is calculated using current fan equity (home box office revenues) and the trend in fan equity (willingness to engage) via social media.

The New England Patriots came in first, the Dallas Cowboys second, the Denver Broncos third, the San Francisco 49ers fourth and the Philadelphia Eagles rounded out the top five.

"The one result that gives me the most doubt is for the Pittsburgh Steelers," Lewis writes. "The Steelers have long been considered one of the league premier teams and brands. The Steelers have a history of championships and have been known to turn opposing stadiums into seas of yellow and black. So why are the Steelers ranked 18th?"

Lewis says last year the Steelers had an average attendance of 64,356 with an average ticket price of $84.

He says that may be to blame for their drop this year.

"It's entirely reasonable to argue that the Steelers relationship to the Pittsburgh community results in a policy of pricing below market," he writes.

Lewis also notes that in past years the Steelers have been the social media champions, but this year they dropped to 5th.

They now have 1.3 million Twitter followers, that's compared to 2.4 million for the Patriots, and 1.7 million for the Cowboys.
