PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Under the bowling alley on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, Cyndie Delucia opened her NatuRoll Creamery last week and can't believe the crowds she is drawing already.
"It's unbelievable how many people are coming in to try this. They are coming to see them work, see how much fun it is," Delucia says.
"Them" is her staff who she has trained to create Rolled Ice Cream. Not scooped, rolled.
"I saw it on YouTube, and I'm an ice cream fanatic, so I decided to go to New York City and see how it was made," Delucia said.
She then installed an ice cream freezing pan in her home and spent six months perfecting the recipe and the technique.
With the freezing pans at 14 degrees below zero, the cream is poured onto the surface, fresh ingredients are added for any one of the combinations NatuRoll offers, and it's all mixed with scrapers.
Once mixed, it's spread evenly across the pan, left to freeze for a minute, then scraped up in rolls.
Justin Jones watched his peanut butter cup being made in amazement.
"It's something you don't expect to see in Pittsburgh, maybe New York City or something. It looks delicious," he said.
Ava Bronder heard about the shop and brought her family to check it out. Her brother, Austin, was impressed.
"I think it's really cool how they make it, and you can see all the ingredients they put into it, and you can see the whole process. And it's really good," he said.
Ava's mom, Tiffany, chose the Very Berry.
"It's such a cool concept. I love it," she said.
Ava added, "It taste completely different from other ice creams, and I like it."
Delucia says if you come; don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit.
"The wait is because of the experience," she said. "It does take three minutes to make one ice cream and it's just the experience of watching this liquid batter turn into this fabulous rolled ice cream."
The shop is located at 4318 Butler Street in Lawrenceville and offers quite a variety of combinations, including some made with coffee ice cream. There is only one size, which is enough to share, and the cost is $7.
