Lawrence County D.A. Planning County-Wide School Safety Summit

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- The Lawrence County District Attorney tells KDKA he's planning a county-wide school safety summit in early January in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Meanwhile, school districts there aren't wasting any time as they put new crisis plans into place.

New Castle Superintendent George Gabriel told KDKA's Kym Gable he will go before the school board on Wednesday at a special meeting to talk about enhancing protection protocol for students.

He says even 4-year-olds in the Pre-K program should have extra safety measures in place.

That includes the possibility of guards at every building in the district.

"It's tragic; it's something that pierces the heart," said Gabriel. "In my opinion, there's no such thing as overreacting, that what we saw in this tragedy this past Friday, so that will certainly be a consideration."

New Castle Area High School already has one armed school resource officer, and on Monday, the district started stationing another armed security guard at the school in the morning.
