Jim Bowden: Deal For A.J. Burnett Still On The Table

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Former MLB General Manager and ESPN and SiriusXM Analyst Jim Bowden joined Bob Pompeani Saturday as the trade deadline approaches. Bowden told Pompeani that the Pirates are working on a deal with the Phillies for A.J.

"Ruben Amaro and Neal Huntington continue to work on a deal that will bring Burnett back to Pittsburgh and I do think that this is going to happen, Bob, at some point. What is complicated, of course, is the financial aspect, even more so than the player return Philadelphia would get," Bowden said. "They continue to work on the deal, but every sign that we're getting from the Phillies front office is they think at some point this is going to get done between now and the deadline."

Pompeani asked if the Pirates could be a player for Tampa Bay pitcher David Price or Boston pitcher Jon Lester.

"I just don't think the Pirates, based on as you know where they are financially, that they're going to give up the prospect packages it's going to take for those guys," Bowden said.

Pompeani asked Bowden if he thought that the Pirates would make any moves, big or small, before the deadline.

"Yeah, Bob, I think they make a deal and the only reason I say that is that's the vibe I've been getting from Clint Hurdle and Neal Huntington, and from afar it's the vibe I get from Frank Coonelly and Bob Nutting," Bowden said.
