Incredible Pittsburgh Lightning Photos Go Viral

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Strong storms brought powerful winds, heavy rain, and lightning to the area Wednesday night into Thursday.

Photographer Dave DiCello was on Mt. Washington as the storms moved through and took some incredible photographs as lightning streaked across the Steel City.

He says that you could actually see the rain moving in and that it looked like a wall of water approaching Pittsburgh.

"Storm started out with soaking rains, wasn't sure that I was evening going to get much lightning as it was covered by the clouds. As the rain passed however, the clouds opened up, and there was strike after strike after strike," DiCello said.

He managed to take some incredible photographs of the lightning that are now going viral.

"The lightning was so massive that it extended from far down the Mon all the way back to the city," he said.

Several other viewers reported lightning, and sent in photos as well.

Some of the storms were severe with roadways flooded, and lightning is being blamed on several overnight fires.

A duplex fire on Harmony Drive in McCandless is being blamed on the lightning.

Two families who lived at the home did manage to make it out safely, but a car parked in a garage was destroyed.

Lightning was also blamed on a fire at People's Food Mart in Dormont.

The cleanup continues from both those fires, and they are under investigation.

"Couple of showers moved through this morning, then we caught a break, then that line of heavy storms hit and put down the rainfall totals that you saw," said KDKA's Jon Burnett.

Burnett says we'll be in a pattern of unsettled weather for the rest of the week.

"The cold front that came through and triggered the initial squall line, the big one that hit mid-evening [Wednesday], that's moved on south and will continue to move down into the Mason-Dixon Line area, right around Baltimore, DC [on Thursday], and then stall out and just sit there," he said. "It's going to help to keep impulses of energy moving along and coming through the Ohio Valley and stirring the pot. Showers and occasional storms will be the rule right into the weekend."

Some sun is in the forecast for Thursday with thunderstorms and a high of 82.
