Heightened Security At Bethel Park H.S. Causes Confusion

BETHEL PARK (KDKA) - Students at Bethel Park High School arrived to find an increased police presence on campus Monday morning.

Officials said someone made a threat against the school over the weekend.

The move was supposed to be a precaution, but it prompted many parents to rush to the school and take their children home.

By Monday morning, the district had determined that the threat was not credible. However, when students showed up for classes, there was a larger than normal police presence.

"We pulled up to school and I saw four cop cars and I knew something was definitely not right," Christina Perdzila said.

"A rumor was going around that somebody brought a gun in. There's a bunch of state cops and local cops inside. Everybody is getting searched and wanded," Donald Whittington said.

Many of the students called their parents to come pick them up. Some parents were upset because they were not notified by the school.

"It's just chaos, simple chaos. I have no clue. I still have no clue what's going on nobody gave us information," Marian Koller said.

"I'm just concerned about all the students and I'm curious of what happened and what caused all this and hopefully we can get to the bottom of it," Lisa Stugan said.

The Bethel Park School District didn't notify parents because they said the threat was not credible. The district is taking the blame for all the confusion.

"We thought it might be prudent to have some increased police presence at the school this morning hopefully to make kids fell safer but unfortunately i think that increased police presence only exacerbated the panic," Vicki Flotta said.

Bethel Park School District would not reveal the content of the threat. They said a suspect has been identified and if that suspect is a student, they will be dealt with.
