Student allegedly grazed by bullet during dismissal, Duquesne City School District says

A high school student was allegedly grazed by a bullet during dismissal on Monday, the Duquesne City School District said.

In a letter to families, Duquesne City School District Superintendent Sue A. Mariani said an "incident" happened during bus dismissal involving high school students.

"At this time, the information provided to us indicates that a high school student was allegedly grazed by a bullet. This is the full extent of what we know at this moment," Mariani said.

According to court documents, Jamar Saunders, 21, is facing several charges in connection with the shooting, including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, criminal mischief and firearms charges. Police said that Saunders and another person were seen on surveillance video firing shots at the victim.

Sixty-nine-year-old Darlene, who said she's Saunders' grandma, said she opened her front door Monday to flashing lights and police surrounding her home on Auriles Street.

"To be honest, I didn't know what was going on, like I said, because there be so much people on this street shooting back and forth back and forth. I stand back because a bullet don't have no name," she said.

Police said more than 20 shots were fired. KDKA-TV learned the West Mifflin Area School District student was grazed by a bullet just minutes after getting transported home by a Duquesne school bus.

"He should've stayed home like I told him to," Darlene said about her grandson.
