Duquesne Light Warning Customers About New Scam

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Duquesne Light is warning customers about a scam that appears to be targeting local businesses.

Del's Restaurant in Bloomfield received a call over the weekend from someone claiming to be from Duquesne Light.

The caller said that the restaurant's electricity would be shut off because of an unpaid utility bill.

The caller requested that the person go to Rite Aid or CVS and purchase money cards for $500 and $84.98, then send in the cash.

The decades-old hot spot in Little Italy immediately checked its account and found that it was up to date on payments.

Del's did not send any money.

Duquesne Light spokesperson Brian Knavish says Del's is not the only victim.

He says there are some red flags you can look out for to avoid a scam.

First, Duquesne Light will never threaten a same day shutoff. They also will never ask you to purchase a prepaid payment card.

All collection calls are made on business days, before 8 p.m.

In addition, Duquesne Light will not ask for money on the spot.

If you receive a call that you believe is a scam, you can call Duquesne Light to check on your account.

You should also call Pittsburgh Police.
