Handyman Douglas Berry Charged With Criminal Homicide In Elizabeth Wiesenfeld's Disappearance

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The handyman who police were calling a prime suspect in the disappearance of a Whitehall woman is now facing criminal homicide charges.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office held a news conference Thursday morning to announce the new developments.

Douglas Berry, 48, has now been charged with homicide and other counts in connection with the disappearance of Elizabeth "Betsy" Wiesenfeld.

Wiesenfeld was last seen on April 30 at her home on East Barlind Drive.

Her remains have not been recovered.

However, police did find Wiesenfeld's cell phone in the South Side, and detectives think Berry may have used the phone after she disappeared.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala says investigators used surveillance video, as well as cell phone pings and text messages from Wiesenfeld's cell phone.

"At 8:16 a.m., there's a 911 call from a home in Forward Township," said Zappala. "The defendant Douglas Berry, who was charged with various crimes this morning, including criminal homicide, is pounding on a door to this residence demanding money. The location is approximately 10 miles from the home where Betsy lives in Whitehall. It would take 20-27 minutes to travel from that location to arrive in Whitehall."

Barry is already in jail on a gun violation. Detectives found a loaded gun inside his Liberty Borough home.

The last case like this one, where the victim's body had not yet been recovered, was in 2007.
