2 children killed in Indiana County house fire, officials say
Two children have died after a house fire in Indiana County. The fire was reported in Dilltown, Buffington Township, just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The victims were identified as a 12-year-old female and a 14-year-old male, per a public information report from Indiana County Coroner Jerry L. Overman Jr. Three other residents were able to escape the home, Coroner Overman confirmed.
The 12- and 14-year-olds were girlfriend and boyfriend, according to family friend Kara Baird.
"Sad, your heart just breaks. There are two people lost. There are no words," Baird said. "It's terrible because I drive a school van, and I've driven these kids for years now, this family."
What was left of the home had been reduced to a pile of rubble on Sunday afternoon.
She had gotten to know the 12-year-old girl who lived on Dilltown Heights Road.
"She was full of life, she was a nice little girl," Baird said.
"The boy's name is Justin Haase," Baird said. An online obituary posted for him on Sunday said he was a jokester who always made sure everyone was smiling.
"It's just sad, trying to heat a home, and this happens," Baird said. "They lost everything, there are no pictures, there's nothing."
The family did not have a lot of means, Baird said, but they did everything they could for their kids. She's trying to raise money for their family.
"They need help. They're going to need to pay for funeral costs, they're gonna have to find a place to live, right now they're living with an aunt, there's so much they need help with right now."
The fire was difficult to fight because every time firefighters seemed to knock down one area, it would strengthen somewhere else, crews told KDKA-TV.
When a KDKA-TV arrived at the scene Sunday afternoon, smoke was rising from the middle of the pile.
KDKA-TV called 911 twice, the second call coming 45 minutes after the first, at which point flames were present. That brought crews back to the scene, where they extinguished the burning area.
