Construction Along Busy South Hills Road Creates Traffic Congestion

CASTLE SHANNON (KDKA) -- When it comes to busy streets in Castle Shannon, Grove Road is on the top of the list.

It's heavily traveled, pretty much all day, every day.

"It's only a local road, it's not a state road, but it's a major thoroughfare between say Whitehall, other South Hills communities and Route 88, even going over to Route 19," said Chief Ken Truver, of Castle Shannon Police.

Today, the road was even more congested, thanks to crews working on a gas line restoration project.

The project started back in November, but this week, crews are restricting traffic.

"They started this morning around 6 o'clock, and at sometimes the traffic cues were 10 minutes or longer, so it will be one lane alternating traffic throughout the day today while they grate and tomorrow while they pave," said Chief Truver.

Chief Truver is asking motorists to avoid Grove Road, if at all possible.

For those who have no other option, there is a police officer and flaggers helping to direct traffic.

People caught in the delays today say they are used to sitting and waiting.

"I drive around Pittsburgh for my job and its everywhere, so it's either... in the winter its snow, in the summer its construction," said Debi Leventry, of Whitehall.

"If they don't fix it, people complain, if they do fix it, people complain, so you can't do anything," added Ralph Carr, also of Whitehall.

Paving along Grove Road is expected to wrap up by 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
