3 Employees Hurt At Westmoreland Co. Stone Quarry
UNITY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Two medical helicopters were called to a stone quarry in Westmorland County early Wednesday morning.
Officials say three employees at the Whitney Stone Quarry in Unity Township were injured around 5 a.m. when a massive rock fall created a huge wall of fast moving air inside the company's underground operations tunnel.
The site is managed by Hanson Aggregates. They released a statement Wednesday afternoon:
"Early this morning there was an incident at our Whitney Quarry involving ground movement above a portion of the underground mine. While no one was inside at the time of the incident, three employees standing outside the mine entrance were injured," Vice President & General Manager Ron Kurpiel said.
Two were flown to area hospitals for treatment, while another person was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
It is believed that two of the employees suffered head injuries.
However, one of the injured employees has since been treated and released.
The business, which employs 50-60 people, manufactures brick, block and stone.
Today, numerous cars with government plates were seen entering the gates, which were guarded.
The names and conditions of those hurt this morning have not been release.
State and federal officials are investigating.
